Virginia SOL Math / Grade 6 / Probability & Statistics
Circle Graphs & the Data Cycle
What you'll learn
- Formulate questions and collect data for a circle graph
- Represent data using a circle graph
- Analyze and interpret data shown in a circle graph
Words to know
- Circle graph —
- a graph shaped like a circle divided into parts
- Sector —
- a slice of a circle graph
- Percent —
- a part out of 100, shown with %
- Data —
- the information you collect
- Data cycle —
- the steps of asking, collecting, organizing, and analyzing
Why it matters Circle graphs show how a whole is divided, so we can quickly see which part is largest and how the pieces compare.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
A circle graph shows 50 percent walk, 30 percent bus, 20 percent bike. Which is the most common way to travel?
The largest sector is the most common. Since 50 percent is the biggest slice, walking is the most common way to travel.
Try It TogetherWe do
In a survey of 40 students, 25 percent chose soccer. How many students chose soccer?
Find 25 percent of 40 by multiplying: 0.25 times 40 = 10. So 10 students chose soccer.
Now YouYou do
A circle graph shows 40 percent read, 35 percent games, 25 percent sports. Which activity is least common?
Compare the percents to find the smallest sector. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.

Warm-up
Ease in with the basics.
1.The sectors of a circle graph must add up to what percent?
2.Which sector is larger: 55 percent or 25 percent?
3.A circle graph shows 60 percent and one more sector. What percent is the missing sector?
On Level
The core Quick Check from the book.
1.The sectors of a circle graph must add up to what percent?
2.A sector is 20 percent of 200 students. How many students is that?
3.If one sector is 60 percent, what percent is the rest of the graph?
4.Which sector is larger: 45 percent or 30 percent?
5.A circle graph shows 10 percent, 40 percent, and one more sector. What percent is the missing sector?
Challenge
Stretch your thinking.
1.A circle graph shows 30 percent, 25 percent, and 15 percent. What percent is the last sector?
2.In a survey of 200 students, 35 percent chose pizza. How many students chose pizza?
3.A circle graph of 80 pets shows 25 percent are cats. How many pets are cats?
