Virginia SOL Math / Grade 6 / Number & Number Sense
Integers
What you'll learn
- Represent integers on a number line and in context
- Compare and order integers using >, <, and =
- Identify the absolute value and the opposite of an integer
Words to know
- Integer —
- a whole number or its opposite, including 0
- Negative number —
- a number less than zero
- Opposite —
- two numbers the same distance from 0 on opposite sides
- Absolute value —
- the distance a number is from 0, always positive
- Number line —
- a line that shows numbers in order
Why it matters Integers describe temperatures below zero, elevations below sea level, and money owed, so we can compare gains and losses.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Compare -5 and -2 using > or <.
On a number line, numbers farther left are smaller. Since -5 is to the left of -2, we write -5 < -2. The opposite of -5 is 5.
Try It TogetherWe do
Order -3, 4, 0, and -6 from least to greatest.
The most negative number is smallest. From left to right on the number line the order is -6, -3, 0, 4.
Now YouYou do
What is the absolute value of -8, written as |-8|?
Find the distance from 0 on the number line. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
Practice
Mastered 0 of 11
Warm-up
Ease in with the basics.
1.What is the opposite of 6?
2.Find the absolute value: |-5|.
3.Write >, <, or = : -2 ___ 3
On Level
The core Quick Check from the book.
1.Write >, <, or = : -7 ___ -4
2.What is the opposite of 9?
3.Find the absolute value: |-12|.
4.Order from least to greatest: 2, -5, -1, 3.
5.Which is colder: a temperature of -3 degrees or -8 degrees?
Challenge
Stretch your thinking.
