Virginia SOL Math / Grade 5 / Probability & Statistics
Line Plots & Stem-and-Leaf Plots
What you'll learn
- Apply the data cycle to formulate questions and collect data
- Represent data with line plots and stem-and-leaf plots
- Analyze data displays and answer questions about them
Words to know
- Data —
- information you collect
- Line plot —
- a display showing data as marks above a number line
- Stem-and-leaf plot —
- a display that splits each value into a stem and a leaf
- Stem —
- the leading digit or digits of a value
- Leaf —
- the final digit of a value
Why it matters Data displays turn a list of numbers into a picture, making it easy to spot the most common values and the spread.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
In a stem-and-leaf plot, the stem 3 has leaves 2, 5, and 8. List the values.
The stem is the tens digit and each leaf is a ones digit. Combining stem 3 with each leaf gives the values 32, 35, and 38.
Try It TogetherWe do
A line plot shows X marks at 5 (three times) and 6 (two times). How many data points are there?
Count every X across all the values: three at 5 plus two at 6. That is 3 + 2 = 5 data points in all.
Now YouYou do
In a stem-and-leaf plot, stem 4 has leaves 0 and 7. List the values.
Join the stem with each leaf to build the numbers. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.

Warm-up
Ease in with the basics.
1.In a stem-and-leaf plot, stem 1 has leaf 4. What value is this?
2.A line plot has 3 marks at 7. How many students scored 7?
3.What does a stem represent in a two-digit stem-and-leaf plot?
On Level
The core Quick Check from the book.
1.In a stem-and-leaf plot, stem 2 has leaf 6. What value is this?
2.A line plot has 4 marks at 8. How many students scored 8?
3.What does a leaf represent in a stem-and-leaf plot?
4.List the values for stem 5 with leaves 1 and 9.
5.A line plot shows marks at 3 (two) and 4 (three). How many data points in all?
Challenge
Stretch your thinking.
1.In a stem-and-leaf plot, stem 6 has leaves 2, 2, and 9. List the values and tell how many are 62.
2.A line plot shows marks at 2 (four), 3 (one), and 5 (three). How many data points are there in all?
3.A stem-and-leaf plot has stems 4 and 5. Stem 4 has leaves 1 and 8; stem 5 has leaf 3. What is the greatest value?
