Why it matters Money, measurement, and data all mix fractions and decimals, so being able to compare and order them keeps our answers accurate.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Compare 0.7 and 0.68.
Line up the place values: 0.70 and 0.68. The tenths are 7 and 6, and 7 is greater than 6, so 0.7 is greater than 0.68. We write 0.7 > 0.68.
Try It TogetherWe do
Order 3/5, 0.5, and 0.75 from least to greatest.
Rewrite each as a decimal: 3/5 = 0.6, 0.5 stays 0.5, and 0.75 stays 0.75. Comparing 0.5, 0.6, and 0.75 gives the order 0.5, 3/5, 0.75.
Now YouYou do
Write >, <, or = : 0.45 ___ 1/2.
Change 1/2 to a decimal, then compare place values. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
