Compare & Order Whole Numbers

What you'll learn

  • Compare two whole numbers up to seven digits using >, <, =, and not equal to
  • Order up to four whole numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least
  • Use place value to justify a comparison

Words to know

Greater than (>) —
the first number is larger
Less than (<) —
the first number is smaller
Equal to (=) —
the numbers have the same value
Not equal to —
the numbers have different values
Order —
arrange numbers from least to greatest, or the reverse

Why it matters Comparing large numbers tells us which city is bigger, which price is lower, or which team scored more.

Worked examples

Model ItI do

Compare 1,482,300 and 1,428,300.

Line up the places and compare from the left. Millions (1) and hundred-thousands (4) match. In the ten-thousands place, 8 is greater than 2, so 1,482,300 > 1,428,300.

Try It TogetherWe do

Order 52,140, 52,410, and 5,240 from least to greatest.

The number 5,240 has only four digits, so it is least. Then compare 52,140 and 52,410 in the hundreds place: 1 < 4. Order: 5,240 < 52,140 < 52,410.

Now YouYou do

Write >, <, or = : 360,000 ___ 306,000.

Compare the ten-thousands place after the hundred-thousands match. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
