Worked examples

Model ItI do

Name the place and value of the 6 in 634,208,157.

The 6 sits in the hundred-millions place, so its value is 600,000,000. The commas break the number into periods (millions, thousands, ones), which makes each place easy to find.

Try It TogetherWe do

Round 47,382 to the nearest thousand.

Look at the hundreds digit, which is 3. Since 3 is less than 5, the thousands digit stays the same. So 47,382 rounds to 47,000.

Now YouYou do

Write 5,060,900 in word form.

Read one period at a time, from left to right, and say the period name. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
