Worked examples

Model ItI do

A circle is cut into 4 equal parts and 1 part is shaded. What fraction is shaded?

The whole has 4 equal parts, so 4 is on the bottom. One part is shaded, so 1 is on top. The shaded part is one fourth, written 1/4.

Try It TogetherWe do

There are 6 apples. If you take one third of them, how many do you take?

One third means we split the 6 apples into 3 equal groups. Each group has 2 apples, so one third of 6 is 2 apples.

Now YouYou do

A rectangle is split into 2 equal parts and 1 part is shaded. What fraction is shaded?

Count the equal parts and the shaded parts. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
