Virginia SOL Math / Grade 2 / Number & Number Sense
Compare & Order Numbers to 999
What you'll learn
- Compare two whole numbers up to 999 using the words and symbols greater than, less than, and equal to
- Order three whole numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least
- Use place value to explain a comparison
Words to know
- Greater than (>) —
- the first number is larger
- Less than (<) —
- the first number is smaller
- Equal to (=) —
- the numbers have the same value
- Compare —
- decide which number is more or less
- Order —
- arrange numbers from least to greatest, or the reverse
Why it matters Comparing numbers helps us tell which is more, such as points in a game or days left, and put a list in a sensible order.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Compare 348 and 342.
Compare from the left. The hundreds (3) and tens (4) are the same. In the ones place, 8 is greater than 2, so 348 is greater than 342. We write 348 > 342.
Try It TogetherWe do
Order 120, 210, and 102 from least to greatest.
Compare the hundreds first: 102 and 120 both have 1 hundred, but 210 has 2 hundreds, so 210 is greatest. Between 102 and 120, compare tens: 0 is less than 2. Order: 102, 120, 210.
Now YouYou do
Write >, <, or = : 460 ___ 406.
Compare the tens place after the hundreds. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
