Virginia SOL Math / Grade 2 / Number & Number Sense
Place Value to 999
What you'll learn
- Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a three-digit number
- Write numbers in standard, expanded, and word form
- Compose and decompose numbers using hundreds, tens, and ones
Words to know
- Digit —
- any of the symbols 0 to 9 used to write numbers
- Ones —
- the place at the far right, worth 1 each
- Tens —
- the place worth 10 each
- Hundreds —
- the place worth 100 each
- Standard form —
- a number written with digits, like 253
- Expanded form —
- a number shown as the sum of each place value
Why it matters Place value lets us read and write numbers correctly, so we know the 5 in 253 means fifty, not just five.
Worked examples
Model ItI do
Name the place and value of each digit in 253.
The 2 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 200. The 5 is in the tens place, worth 50. The 3 is in the ones place, worth 3. In expanded form: 200 + 50 + 3.
Try It TogetherWe do
Write 406 in word form and expanded form.
Word form: four hundred six. The tens place is 0, so we do not name any tens. Expanded form: 400 + 6.
