Worked examples
Model ItI do
Show 34 with tens and ones, then compare it to 43.
34 is 3 tens and 4 ones. 43 is 4 tens and 3 ones. Compare the tens first: 4 tens is more than 3 tens, so 43 is greater than 34.
Try It TogetherWe do
Which is greater, 58 or 85?
Look at the tens. 85 has 8 tens and 58 has 5 tens. Since 8 tens is more than 5 tens, 85 is greater than 58.
Now YouYou do
Order these from least to greatest: 27, 72, 17.
Compare the tens, then the ones, to put them in order. Check your answer in the back of this chapter.
